Originally developed as a mixed use retail center in the 1980’s, Delta Park Center continues to be a shopping destination for the North Portland/Vancouver region. Currently home to major retailers such as Lowe’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Fisherman’s Marine and Outdoor, and Guitar Center, Delta Park Center has a long history of being a diverse and convenient shopping location. Adjacent to both Portland Park’s Delta Park sports facility and the Portland Meadows horse racing track, Delta Park Center is located just off of Interstate 5 in North Portland. The newest addition to Delta Park Center is a Wal-Mart Supercenter; this store’s design is unique amongst Wal-Mart’s portfolio as it incorporates many environmentally friendly and sustainable elements. It will serve as a prototype store design to be used elsewhere across the country. As one of the country’s most significant retailers in terms of size and footprint, Wal-Mart recognizes the need to be a leader in minimizing their environmental impact, and the new Delta Park Center location will be an excellent proving ground for some new concepts.

The Wal-Mart Supercenter located at Delta Park Center features Portland’s largest green roof, nearly half of the approximately 92,000 square-foot store’s roof is covered in vegetation and sediment. Wal-Mart is also partnering with Portland State providing an opportunity for students and faculty to study the roof and help improve upon future green roof design. The roof’s vegetation is used to manage storm water as well as help cool the store. The portion of the roof that is not covered in vegetation features a white membrane with high solar reflectivity to reduce the building’s energy consumption.
